Rocky Mountain Flycasters: Squarespace Component System
Built and actively evolving a reusable component system for rmftu.org within Squarespace. Currently finalizing site styles aligned with National Trout Unlimited brand guidelines to solidify the RMFTU identity and modernize the visual presence.
The Challenge
Rocky Mountain Flycasters needed a website that could grow and evolve while maintaining a cohesive visual identity—all within Squarespace’s constraints. The organization has diverse content needs: upcoming outings and events, fly tying library resources, project pages, and board minutes. Without a standardized design approach, the site risked becoming visually fragmented as new pages and sections were added by different team members.
The Solution
Instead of fighting Squarespace’s platform boundaries, I’m building a component-based approach using Squarespace’s saved sections feature. This creates a reusable design system within the platform’s native constraints, enabling consistent brand expression across all content types while reducing creation friction.
Component System:
- Two Hero Variations: Full-width hero for landing pages and section headers, plus a compact variant for nested pages
- Announcement Banner: Persistent section for events, updates, or calls-to-action
- Content Blocks: Standardized layouts for resource cards, event details, and project information
Design Principles:
- Consistency: Every page uses the same hero structure and visual hierarchy
- Reusability: Saved sections enable one-click duplication and rapid page composition
- Brand Trust: Unified color, typography, and spacing builds credibility
- Flexibility: Components work across different content types (events, resources, projects)
Content Areas Managed:
- Calendar events and outings (upcoming and archived)
- Fly tying library with technique documentation
- Project pages for conservation initiatives
- Board meeting minutes and organizational updates
Key Implementation Details
Component Design
- Defined two hero variants with consistent spacing, typography, and imagery areas
- Created announcement banner with flexible content options (text, links, CTAs)
- Established color palette and accent patterns for consistency across sections
- Set standardized image dimensions and aspect ratios for visual harmony
Saved Sections Strategy (Ongoing)
- Saved each component as a Squarespace section for one-click reuse
- Created naming conventions and documentation for team clarity
- Testing components across different content types to ensure flexibility
- Optimizing for mobile and desktop viewing
- Expanding library as new content patterns emerge
Ongoing Content Maintenance
- Regularly update calendar with new outings and event details
- Add and organize fly tying resources and techniques
- Document project pages for conservation initiatives
- Archive and maintain board meeting minutes
Brand Standards Alignment (Current Phase)
- Finalizing site styles to align with National Trout Unlimited brand guidelines
- Systematizing color palette, typography, and spacing across all pages
- Expanding component library to support updated brand identity
- Ensuring consistency as styles are rolled out site-wide
- Documenting design decisions for long-term brand maintenance
Design Consistency
- All pages share the same hero structure, reducing cognitive friction
- Announcement banners create visual unity without being heavy-handed
- Typography and spacing follow established grid patterns and emerging brand standards
- Color usage reinforces brand identity while remaining aligned with organizational guidelines
Results
- 3 primary components (2 hero variants + announcement banner) provide consistent visual foundation
- Rapid page composition using saved sections reduces creation time and friction
- 4 active content streams (events, fly tying library, projects, minutes) updated regularly
- Brand consistency maintained across all pages despite Squarespace platform constraints
- Scalable system grows as new sections are created and reused
Impact
This project demonstrates that thoughtful component design isn’t limited to custom development platforms. Within Squarespace’s constraints, using saved sections as a pseudo-design-system creates visual unity, reduces decision fatigue, and builds brand trust.
By establishing reusable components early, new pages can be created faster while maintaining the same high-quality presentation. As the site grows with new content (additional event types, more resources, new project pages), the component foundation adapts without requiring redesign work.
The key insight: consistency compounds. Small decisions about hero structure, announcement styling, and spacing patterns, when applied systematically across every page, create a professional and trustworthy presence—especially valuable for volunteer-run organizations where resources are limited.
Current focus includes finalizing brand standards aligned with National Trout Unlimited guidelines, expanding the component library as new content needs emerge (e.g., resource card variations, timeline components), and refining based on how different content types perform within the saved section framework. This brand standardization work strengthens the RMFTU identity while ensuring the Squarespace component system scales effectively as organizational needs grow.
